Litter tax approved by parliaments

The draft legislation for the new litter tax for producers was approved by the parliaments of Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders. We expect the text to be published in the Belgian Official Gazette in the coming weeks.

The litter tax will amount to €102 million per year and applies to single-use plastic packaging for drinks and specific food products. Drinks cans and cigarette packets will also be taxed. The proceeds are intended for cleaning up litter, emptying street bins and running awareness-raising campaigns.

What does this tax mean for your company?

The draft decree will only come into force following its publication in the Belgian Official Gazette. It is only then that the next steps can be taken. In this blog post, you’ll find more information about the implementation of the litter tax and we’ll answer the most frequently asked questions.
