Innovation in waste management at Living Tomorrow

The future is in constant flux, and the way we will live, work and make our homes after 2030 is undergoing spectacular change. Living Tomorrow, a pioneer in innovation, opened its new Innovation Campus in mid-September, and Fost Plus is proud to be one of its key partners.

An innovative vision of the future

Living Tomorrow’s Innovation Campus is a collaborative ecosystem bringing together more than 80 partners, who share the aim of accelerating innovation substantially. The common thread of the campus is the creation of “digital twins” for our houses, our cars, our workplaces, and even for entire cities. This revolutionary concept offers us a fascinating vision of life after 2030.

Sustainable management of waste at the heart of innovation

We believe in building on solid foundations, while integrating new technologies. The selective collection of PMD via the blue bag is a case in point. Continuing to encourage correct sorting is essential to preserving our resources and our environment.

To promote the sorting, collection and recycling of all packaging placed on the Belgian market, we have placed sustainable waste management in an innovative perspective as part of our collaboration with Living Tomorrow.

At the Innovation Campus, a virtual reality (VR) animation allows visitors to immerse themselves in the reality of a PMD sorting centre. They will discover the various fascinating stages of this process as if they were packaging themselves. This interactive experience aims to raise visitors' awareness of the importance of waste sorting and motivate them to continue sorting correctly wherever they are, as well as demonstrating the processes that follow blue bag collection.

Artificial intelligence (AI) at the service of sorting

Fost Plus has also developed an intelligent waste island that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help visitors sort waste more effectively. Visitors select a package and scan it. The intelligent waste island will recognize the packaging and indicate which waste stream it belongs to.

Fost Plus has launched a test project based on artificial intelligence in the sorting centres. It is intended to improve our processes and maintain high standards. The aim is to progressively improve the sorting processes by means of machine learning. With the incorporation of artificial intelligence at sorting stations, we wish to ensure that as much packaging as possible ends up immediately in the right fraction before collection. And we are already offering this experience today to visitors of Living Tomorrow.

Creation of digital and impactful experiences

To render these concepts easily accessible to the general public, Living Tomorrow and Fost Plus have joined forces to create unforgettable digital and immersive experiences. Visitors are plunged into a world where technology and sustainability are combined to form a better future.

Innovation is the keyword at Living Tomorrow and the driving force behind Fost Plus. Innovation contributes added value in terms of operational efficiency and opens new doors. Fost Plus is proud to be a key partner in achieving this vision of a more sustainable, intelligent and human future.

Join us at Living Tomorrow’s Innovation Campus and discover how we will live, work, and make our homes in the near future.
