The city of Genk is intensifying its fight against litter by introducing the Fost Plus reward system, the Click. From now on, anyone who scans their own waste or picks up rubbish and throws it in the correct bin will be rewarded with virtual points. These can then be converted into credit on the ‘Doe es Genk’ gift voucher card that can be spent with traders in the city.
The Click is an innovative and ambitious project that aims to encourage a change of behaviour as regards waste on the public highway. The app is designed to encourage everyone to throw waste from food and drinks on the go, or litter picked up in the streets, into the appropriate bin. The app is easy to use: people simply have to scan the bar code on the waste or take a photo and then throw it in a public bin. This civic gesture is rewarded by Circular UCoins, virtual points that can be exchanged at places taking part in the action. The Click will therefore motivate members of the public to adopt the correct behaviour.
Genk is already taking multiple initiatives to make the city a cleaner and more pleasant place to live. For example, surveys have been conducted among residents, traders and visitors. These revealed in particular that cigarette butts remain a burden that needs to be dealt with. The city responded promptly by installing public ash trays indicated by clear, visible signs.
So the city of Genk is clear about its responsibility to prevent litter. It agrees, however, that this responsibility should be shared by its citizens. So the aim is to make the job easier for them. That’s why they decided to introduce the Click and to encourage everyone to join in the fight against litter by means of incentives.

With the Click, we are helping everyone to see that litter has a value, in particular thanks to recycling. We aim to ensure that all packaging can be recycled, but to do that, it first has to be collected. Thanks to the Click reward system, we give everyone an incentive to do the right thing: throw their own packaging away properly and pick up litter.
